Simple ways to improve Wi-Fi speed with a modern wireless router

Before blaming your internet plan, check the basics. Most Wi-Fi problems come from router placement, interference or too many devices.

Try these in order

  1. Restart the router. Unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  2. Move the router. Place it in a central, open, raised spot, away from thick walls, microwaves and cordless phones.
  3. Use the 5 GHz band. It is faster than 2.4 GHz at short range. Use 2.4 GHz for devices that are far from the router.
  4. Update the router firmware. Log in to the router settings page and check for updates.
  5. Disconnect unused devices. Every connected phone, TV and camera shares the same bandwidth.
  6. Test with a cable. Connect a computer by Ethernet and run a speed test. If the wired speed is also slow, the issue is the plan or the provider.

If the problem continues, a mesh Wi-Fi system or a second access point can help in large homes.
