A chat backup lets you restore messages when you get a new phone or reinstall WhatsApp. Set it up once and it runs automatically.
On Android (Google Drive)
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Tap Chats > Chat backup.
- Choose Back up to Google Drive and select how often to back up.
- Pick the Google account to use and tap Back up to start the first backup.
On iPhone (iCloud)
- Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now, or turn on Auto Backup.
- Make sure iCloud Drive is turned on and you have enough iCloud storage.
Good to know
Backups can take a long time the first time, so use Wi-Fi. Including videos makes the backup much larger. To restore, install WhatsApp on the new phone, verify your number and follow the restore prompt.
